Raising A Piglet

Feeding Instructions

1) Begin with medicated pig starter crumbles – This is a good starter feed and will transition the piglets from their mother’s milk faster.

2) Medicated milk replacer and warm water – This will help with digestion.

3) After the first bag of medicated feed, transition piglets from crumbles to pig and sow pellets (not hog pellets).  Piglets should have free choice feed.  Pig and sow pellets have a higher level of lysine which is an amino acid that helps convert edible protein into muscle.

4) Worming medication – Worm piglets at 3 months of age and again at 5 months old.  Atguard is a suitable wormer for piglets.  Follow directions on the package.

5) Unlimited access to fresh water.  The two cheapest things you can feed any animal are clean water and clean fresh air.

6) Warm and dry shelter away from the elements.

7) Shade from the sun – Piglets can be sunburnt which will lower growth rates.

8) Pigs are omnivores.  They will eat almost anything.  The only things they don’t like to eat are onions, peppers, and citrus.  If you feed table scraps, make sure that any and all meat has been thoroughly cooked.  For better tasting meat, my advice is not to feed table scraps.
